I’m Engaged! Now What?

Oct 07, 2021

Congrats on your engagement! Soak at the moment and take a deep breath. Once couples are engaged, the next question they get asked is when's the wedding? For us, it was a week before people started asking us that question We were so busy looking into each other's eyes that we forgot that we had a wedding to plan. So now that you're engaged, what should you be doing? Take a look at some of our suggestions below!

1. Take Your Time

This is the most important on the list so that's why we're placing it first. You DO NOT have to start planning for a wedding the minute you're engaged. In fact, we recommend that you don't. You only have a short time of being engaged so really enjoy this. Don't start wedding planning because your family members, neighbors, and aunties are asking you. Start when you are ready. We got asked the question several times, however, we waited two months after we were engaged before we really started wedding planning.

2. Marriage Counseling (Pre-wedding)

No, you don't need to see a therapist. But you need to have some tough conversations before you start the wedding planning process. You need to discuss with your partner what your budget is for the wedding and ensure that you both stick as close to this budget as possible. It's also important to have discussions that might be elephants in the room with others. This includes your finances, where you both will live after marriage, what's your parenting style, what makes you upset and how you deal with it, etc. Getting these discussions out of the way will ensure smoother planning and happier married life. Trust us, you'll get into some arguments when you start wedding planning. Some good pre-marriage counseling questions can be found: here, here, and here.

3. Invest in Organization

The South Asian wedding planning process can be frustrating. If you read our previous blog, the reason we started Pyaari Weddings was that there are hundreds of vendors out there and wedding planning can be complicated. Invest in a wedding planner such as this, this, this, or this. This will keep your notes all in one place and you can track your progress as you go. These planners also have some good tips and templates to make your life easier.

4. Start and Communicate

The best way to plan a wedding is to start. Go out there and look for vendors that you like. If you're in New York, LA, SF, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and DC, check out the vendors that we've vetted. Communicate with your partner as you go along. For the most part, the strategy we used was to divide and conquer. With items like henna, DJs, and photographers, we found it best to divide those and then share our results once we found a vendor we liked. For the big items, like venues and decor, we reviewed those together. Do what works best for you, but make sure you communicate!

We hope these tips helped you in figuring out what to do next! Let us know how your wedding planning process is going and if you're just as frustrated as we were.
