Farah and Salim’s Romantic Proposal At A Kathak Class

Love is in the air and today we're excited to share Farah and Salim's love story! Read on to see how they met and how he popped the question.

How did you and your partner meet? What's your love story?

I was 14 years old. Salim and I had mutual family friends and I knew pretty much from the time that I met him, that he was going to be my husband. I'd say that even within a few years of meeting him, I would jokingly say "Oh yeah that's my future husband and those are my future in-laws" and that was a good three years or so before we even started dating.

And how did he pop the question?

He came to my Kathak class and he had arranged it very sneakily with my Guruji. We were dancing and my Guruji, for those who knew him, was highly unpredictable. He decided we were going to do Kathak to Michael Jackson that day and he put a cassette tape on. He has us do some dance to the song, before saying "Farah, do it by yourself." He put me in the center of the room and I was following the rhythm, making sure I was in taal, and really getting into it. I could hear my dance sisters watching and laughing, and I remember thinking that I must look a little strange.

Well, what I didn't realize was that Salim was walking in behind me and they could see him, but I couldn't. Finally, my Guruji said stop and I walked out of the center of the room, thinking the next person would be put on the spot. And no. There he was. Bouquet of roses. Salim took my hand and in front of my Guruji, and in a space that I hold so near and dear to my heart while I had my ghungroo/bells on, he built up that confidence and he asked me to marry him. And I said yes, of course. So I guess fairy tales do come true sometimes and you can meet your prince!
