Kinjel and Sam’s Proposal At Centennial Park

Love is in the air and today we're excited to share Kinjel and Sam's love story! Read on to see how they met and what advice they have for couples.

When did you get engaged?

Sam and I got engaged on April 6, 2018.

What was your proposal story?

Sam and I have been together since August 2012 and he wanted our proposal to be meaningful to our relationship. We knew each other through my cousin and mutual friends but never dated in high school. On my 18th birthday and soon after our high school graduation, he texted me happy birthday and we continued talking and decided we should meet at a local park (Centennial Park). Afterward, we met often (many times at Centennial park) and it became a special place for us both. Before starting our undergraduate career, we made our relationship official and had the opportunity to continue growing our relationship since we went to the same university. On April 6, 2018, Sam proposed at Centennial Park in front of the same bench we sat on where we first kissed. After he popped the question, my close family and friends came running from behind a bush to hug and congratulate us.

What is the best or most frustrating part of your wedding planning process so far?

Best: The best part of wedding planning is having my dream become reality from the decor to food to vendors to outfits to selecting my venues. My vendor team is absolutely incredible and is striving to make my wedding day perfect. I’ve enjoyed planning each detail with them, allowing me to remember that I have good vendors that I can trust and rely on.

Frustrating: Given that we’ve been planning our wedding since 2018, it was extremely frustrating to move our wedding due to COVID-19 2 months before the big day. We had everything pretty set in stone from food menus to outfits to timelines, and come March we found out we had to either cancel, risk everyone’s health and downsize tremendously, or move it to May 2021. We decided to move it to May 2021 and change the Hindu wedding venue to an outdoor venue.  Another frustrating part of our wedding was buying my wedding outfits virtually without even seeing the outfit or trying it on. My family decided not to go to India which caused a lot of stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights when talking to vendors overseas to make my perfect wedding outfits.

What advice would you give to someone who is ready to propose?

I highly recommend new couples consider getting engaged closer to when they want to get married. While it was nice having ample time to plan, so many roadblocks came in between which caused more stress than truly enjoying the process. Another piece of advice I would give is to remember why you’re getting married in the first place when things getting tough. Don’t ever forget your love for each other when differences arise. Slow down and live in the moment.

Were there any resources that helped you during proposal planning or wedding planning?

Instagram is your best friend. I use IG for everything including finding the best photographers, decor team, wedding planners, and even outfits and jewelry vendors. I honestly don’t know how I would’ve planned my wedding without it. It made everything so accessible and searchable at any given time.
